shades of coral.

4 March 2009

Perhaps you remember Susie Bubble’s period of obsession with the color coral. Revisiting these posts of hers has revived my love for that color – after all, coral is the grown-up, sophisticated version of pink. A dash of orange, a bit of red, a touch of pink. Perfection, I think. And perhaps I love it so because it looks quite good on me (if I may say so myself!).

Oh Marni. Why must you tempt me with your delectably colored shoes? Already I’ve fallen in love with a number of your wedges, and now you mock me with these crossed slingbacks. With a deliciously high, wooden platform juxtaposed with pinky-coral and light brown patent, finished with touches of silver hardware, Marni, you are so cruel. (Net-a-porter.com, $735). Oh, and my dear Alber Elbaz, you must know of my ridiculous, OCD-like (or sans the -like?) habit/obsession of matching my bags perfectly with my ensembles. Lanvin’s Mini pop bag (Net-a-porter.com, $850) in a coordinating pinky-coral satin shoulder bag, complete with a delicate set of silver chains, would indeed finish off any outfit with the aforementioned Marni’s.

From left to right: Willow, Kylie2, Elodie, Heidi, Kara ($6 ea.)

And I would love to have shades of coral grace my nails. Mm, imagine how fun! Grapefruit-like colors under the spring sun. From pinker corals to orange-y corals, the possibilities are endless, really. Would it be too much if I wore Kylie2 with the aforementioned ensemble consisting of the Marni platforms and Lanvin bag?

I remember stumbling upon this ad in a magazine a year or so ago and desperately longing to be able to wear orange-y coral on my lips like the model. The lips pop against barely-there makeup, drawing all eyes and attention to lusciously plump lips. Coral lips are easier to wear than lipsticks; the matte texture of the latter, if applied too thickly/unevenly or if it is just not the color for your skintone, can look as if you’ve kissed a little pot of paint. The more I stare at this Chanel ad, the more I tell myself that I need – not want – the Aqualumiere gloss in that fabulous color, Candy Gloss. The gloss looks pinker in some lights, and orange in others! Faaabulous!

  3. 4 March 2009 9:50 am

could have been me, writing this post.
unfortunately not as elaborate as you, but topic-wise 😉

just like you i love the color coral (this is only the natural consecution of my former love, until i was 16, for the color pink)

and my bag always has to harmonize with my outfit

and in order to make my wardrobe look more like some kind of spring/summer-wardrobe i just bought a coral shirt a few days ago which i am wearing while i am typing this…

hopefully spring will feel attracted by your “ode to coral” and my new shirt!

    Those Marni are marvellous !
I like coral, it’s a subtle mix between nude and fun-summerish color… It can also be really delicate !
Besides the chanel ad is UAO !

Hi there-such gorgeous picks, I really love the bag!!

  10. 4 March 2009 1:05 pm

more fodder for the shoe fund! you really have a knack for picking out swoon-worthy shoes – i’m usually super-picky about them.

  11. 4 March 2009 1:47 pm

Wow love those shoes! And the nail polishes are perfect for spring. Before I was a little skeptical about coral as I’ve always associated with old ladies (hey, you have to admit it’s a pretty dominant color in “older women” clothing stores) but now you’ve convinced me that it’s hot!

I do have a question for you: What sort of corals would suit different skin tones?

  12. 4 March 2009 1:49 pm

Kylie2 and Kara from the zoyas are the shades I think would look good on me 🙂

I like coral, but I don’t own a lot of it.
I recently purchased a coral eye shadow from Aromaleigh.
Hot Stuff – vivid coral-red frost with violet sparks.
    It’s a gorgeous color!
I used it in an orange, coral and fuschia eye look.

I’m not always sure when I’ve selected the right shade, but I tend to stick towards the more red corals, because I find them safest.

I’m so happy to see you devote an entry to coral, because I don’t hear about it very often!

  13. 4 March 2009 1:56 pm

    Those Marnis, WOW.

  14. 4 March 2009 2:38 pm

Is it just coincidence that everything you picked has a high gloss to it? These colors bring the shiny, new promise of Spring.

When I was a little girl, my mother had red hair fashioned into a bubble cut, and she wore orange lipstick. She looked just like my barbie, it was one of my all time favorite looks for her. xo

  15. 4 March 2009 2:48 pm

Ooh I just adore coral colored things – from makeup to accessories to clothes 🙂 It makes me long for spring and summer – coral is my favoriteeee color to wear during the summer! And now I’m lusting over that Marni bag!

  16. 4 March 2009 3:02 pm

You may have just inspired me to try coral nail polish and lip gloss this spring!

  17. 4 March 2009 3:16 pm

Oh nooo I stumbled upon those Marnis earlier today and managed to ignore them and pretend they weren’t there but aaaah they’re so gorgeous!

Also I am now painfully aware of how lacking in coral I am – must go fix this asap !

    Cute post 🙂 xxxxxxx

Oh, coral! What a brilliant color, that I usually don’t wear. Well, that’s going to change. I love the Marnis, and the nail polish, and well, the lipgloss too. I just bought that lipgloss in Party Red, I might just have to get it in that shade as well :]

coral is such a great color for spring!

  30. 4 March 2009 9:19 pm

Sorry La Lovely for having been so MIA!

But you know, this post of yours got me so excited, because I think you’re right – we are some kind of long-lost twins on two separate spots on the planet. I had been surfing net-a-porter recently and I had been repeatedly looking at those exact 2 items: the salmon marni wedges and the lanvin satin bag. In particular the wedges. I was thinking, “how about a spot of colour on the feet this time eh?”

Oh me oh my I like that we click this way. I am somehow praying that no matter how ridiculously it happens, I meet you in Paris. Someday. (:

    Lots of love,
    SEAH!

  31. 4 March 2009 9:41 pm

coral is my favorite forever and ever. 🙂

    • 4 March 2009 9:53 pm

Hui: Yes. This is the sign that we are indeed long lost twins separated by continents + an ocean. (Oh gosh, aren’t those Marni’s beautiful?!). I’m praying too! How amazing would that be!!!! =] It must happen!

Bri: You can buy them here!

Alexis: Aww, thank you darling! The book is called Dreams from my Father, by Mr. Obama himself! =]
